To compete with Honda and Sony’s EV agreement, which will bring PlayStation 5 gaming to future Honda vehicles, Tesla is finally releasing Steam in its vehicles that are capable of running the cloud gaming service. In particular, its high-end Model S and Model X automobiles, have had a 10TFLOPS AMD RDNA 2 graphics processing unit in standard equipment since last year.
Steam Beta is part of Tesla’s latest “holiday” update (2022.44.25), which also provides Apple Music and the Mahjong game to regular people who can’t afford Tesla’s more expensive models. However, on newer Model S/X carries with it thousands of playable games from the Steam lineup, including blockbuster titles like Cyberpunk 2077.
Elon Musk recently stated that the Cybertruck would be capable of running the latter, thus it stands to reason that the infotainment system in Tesla’s first electric pickup would also be powered by AMD hardware. The dedicated graphics system in Tesla is said to be competitive with the GPU in the PlayStation 5, despite having just half as much graphics rendering RAM and therefore bandwidth. It should be able to play all Steam games in decent enough quality for in-car use.
In fact, Elon Musk announced the new Steam gaming feature on Twitter, writing, “you can play Cyberpunk, Elden Ring, and 1000s of other games in your ‘vehicle’ with an epic sound system.” The Steam integration also supports wireless controllers, mice, and keyboards. Anyone who plays the Elden Ring will undoubtedly find this useful.
Elon Musk has gone on record as a fan of Elden Ring, and he recently posted a photo of a Roman fortress in Bulgaria, remarking on the series’ ability to capture the feel of a medieval castle. The Tesla integration feature “syncs with your Steam profile, so you can pick up where you left off at home,” he says, adding from what he’s played of Cyberpunk 2077, “it works beautifully.”
With the recent EV partnership with Honda and Sony bringing PlayStation 5 gaming to future Honda vehicles, Tesla is releasing Steam in its vehicles capable of running the cloud gaming service in an effort to remain competitive. A 10TFLOPS AMD RDNA 2 graphics processing unit has been standard on all Model S and Model X vehicles since last year.
