On Saturday, Elon Musk stated his approval of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and its efforts to safeguard the public, despite the fact that certain FBI agents contacted Twitter in an attempt to silence users and restrict their speech.
Prior to his deplatforming on January 8, 2021 — two days after the storming of Capitol Hill that left five dead — the ‘Twitter Files’ claimed that high-ranking Twitter executives, including former top FBI lawyer Jim Baker, had suppressed and censored former US President Donald Trump in the days leading up to the 2020 election.
A user questioned Musk whether the FBI still works at Twitter and whether or not conservative Twitter accounts are being banned for speaking out against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s address in the US “To be clear, I am overall very much pro-FBI. The agency does a great deal of important work protecting the public.”
“That said, no organization is perfect and part of the FBI obviously overreached with respect to online censorship,” Musk added. The latest Twitter Files claimed that the platform’s executives “were clearly liaising with federal enforcement and intelligence agencies about moderation of election-related content”.
Some people claimed the FBI instructed Twitter to hide the Hunter Biden laptop story and delete other posts, and this raised eyebrows. “it is unfortunate that conspiracy theorists and others are feeding the public misinformation with the sole purpose of attempting to discredit the agency,” the FBI stated in response.
Though some FBI agents have contacted Twitter in an effort to quiet users and limit expression, Elon Musk declared his support for the FBI and its attempts to protect the public on Saturday.
