Lauren McCluskey, a student-athlete at the University of Utah was brutally murd*red two years ago today in 2021. Her parents, Jill and Matt McCluskey and the university just announced a $10.5 million settlement in their case against the school.
The college will also give the Lauren McCluskey Foundation $3 million. During a press conference, the University of Utah President Ruth V. Watkins said (According to ABC News)
“The university acknowledges and deeply regrets that it did not handle Lauren’s case as it should have and that, at the time, its employees failed to fully understand and respond appropriately to Lauren’s situation”.
“”As a result, we have failed Lauren and her family. If these employees had more complete training and protocols to guide their responses, the university believes they would have been better equipped to protect Lauren.”
Lauren McCluskey’s b0dy was discovered in a parked automobile close to a dorm on campus. The same night, Melvin Rowland, McCluskey’s ex-boyfriend, is said to have sh0t and k!lled her before sh00ting himself. The campus police were notified by McCluskey, 21, that Rowland, 37, was stalking and h@rassing her.
After finding that he was a registered s*x offender who had lied about his name and criminal background, including a 2004 conviction for luring a juvenile, McCluskey halted their brief relationship, according to the police.
After the McCluskeys filed a second lawsuit in June alleging that the institution had v!olated the state constitution, a settlement was reached. The complaint states in the weeks leading up to Lauren’s murd*r (as reported by ABC News)
“s*xually and physic@lly @bused, st@lked and thre@tened by her k!ller and that the police “dismissed and avoided her requests for help.”
On Thursday, October 22, 2020, in Salt Lake City, Jill McCluskey, the mother of murd*red University of Utah student-athlete Lauren McCluskey, addresses the media to announce their case against the school resolved.
In addition to their worries about v!olence, Lauren and her companions also told university officials about instances of aggressive behavior. The complaint also claims she asked for assistance, but the university administrators turned her down.
Her parents said the institution did not take Lauren’s accusations seriously in a January 2019 interview with ABC News. Matt McCluskey told ABC News:
“They seemed to show no curiosity about this person who had lied about his age, his name, his … he was a s*x offender. And then they found out that he’s also a felon.”
Her father added (According to News)
“They should’ve investigated. They would’ve very quickly found his parole status in one call and it would … we wouldn’t be sitting here today.”
In this official photo taken on August 30, 2017, in Salt Lake City, Utah, we can see Lauren McCluskey. According to her parents, Lauren McCluskey reported to the university police on October 12 and the Salt Lake City police on October 19. According to investigators, Lauren was kidnapped by Rowland three days later and fatally murd*red in her car while speaking with her mother on the phone.
Court records state that the settlement’s terms call for a $10.5 million payment to the McCluskey family by early 2021, a $3 million donation to the Lauren McCluskey Foundation by March 31 of that year, a track indoors for the track and field team, and the renaming of the University of Utah’s Center for Violence Prevention as the McCluskey Center for Violence and Prevention.
The university’s risk management team and an insurance company will pay the family. The university has announced plans to alter campus security in the two years since McCluskey passed away, including a $13 million structure to house the school’s police department.
In June 2019, the McCluskey family filed a $56 million federal court lawsuit against the University of Utah, a few of its staff, and the state of Utah. Afterward, the family brought a negligence and wrongful dea†h claim in state court.
