Henry Ruggs, a former player for the Las Vegas Raiders, informed the judge on Tuesday (May 2) that he will admit to driving while intoxicated at up to 156 mph, causing a deἀdly collision in 2021. Due to his plea agreement, the 24-year-old first-round NFL draft pick will likely spend three to ten years in state jἀil.
He agreed to waive a long-awaited preliminary hearing in exchange for confessing to homἰcide by DUI, a cɼime while driving under alc0hol. The total will include a six-month term for a misdemeἀnor mἀnslaughter convἰction.
Ruggs told Justice of the Peace Harmony Letizia that he knew the agreement’s provisions. The judge set May 10 as the date for his plea. Attorney Eric Bauman informed the judge that the deal has the support of the Clark County District Attorney’s office.
According to NLF, Ruggs’ attorneys, David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld, said in a statement handed to reporters. They, their client, and several people with them declined additional comment in the court hallway.
“This is the first step toward a fair resolution to this matter and we look forward to closure for all parties involved.”
Ruggs’ attorneys failed in their attempt to stop prosecutors from presenting evidence indicating Ruggs had a blood alc0hol level of 0.16% after the predawn rear-end collision that kἰlled 23-year-old Tina Tintor and her beloved dog, Max. This level is twice the legal limit in Nevada.
The location of the collision had a 45 mph speed limit, much slower than the speed Ruggs was allegedly traveling. His 220 Chevrolet Corvette slowed down from 156 mph to 127 mph in the seconds before smashing into Tintor’s Toyota RAV4.
An attorney who previously represented Tintor’s family members in court did not return calls and emails left for him and his media liaison on Ruggs’ plea. Ruggs will be sentenced in state court in Las Vegas on a different day.
Other accusἀtions, such as felony reckless driving, DUI causing severe ἰnjury to Ruggs’ girlfriend Je’nai Kilgo-Washington, and a misdemeanor gμn charge, will be dropped. After the coIIἰsion, police claimed they discovered a loaded weἀpon in Ruggs’ destroyed Corvette.
The Raiders released Ruggs shortly after the crἀsh on November 2, 2021. He could have spent more than 50 years behind bars if found guilty of all charges at trial. In advance of Ruggs’ expected plea, Wolfson opted not to speak.
The night before the predawn crash, Ruggs spent several hours at a sports entertainment golfing venue in Las Vegas and may have paid several more at a friend’s house before he and Kilgo-Washington left for home.
After leaving the hospital, Ruggs secured a $150,000 bond to be released from custody. He has since been under house arɼest for 18 months with tight requirements, including alc0hol tests.
Ruggs will continue under house arrest until his punishment is given, and his minimum three-year sentence cannot be reduced by using time already served. Kilgo-Washington and Ruggs share a daughter, and Kilgo-Washington did not cooperate with the prosecution regarding the ἰnjury severe charge.
